Abstract

Wasting and stunting are risks of malnutrition that often occur in Low birth weight (LBW) babies. Improving the nutritional status of LBW babies requires high-energy protein and fat, but the problem is due to the lack of motor skills in LBW babies. Objectives: The purpose of this observation was to determine the effect of hindmilk in increasing the weight of LBW babies. Methods: This study was a prospective study with a case series observation design. This observation uses secondary data conducted in April-November 2016 and November 2017 in the Perinatal Room of Dr. Sardjito Hospital. The research subjects were 12 LBW babies with body weight <1700 grams. Results: In this study, the results showed that the average weight gain of LBW who were given Hindmilk was 33.98 grams with weight gain about 10-74 grams/day. When the LBW babies weren't given hindmilk then they would lose weight (10-72 grams/day). The increase in LBW weight given with hindmilk was due to the high fat and energy content in Hindmilk, namely fat 4.14-5.2 g/100mL and energy 76.34-86.49 kcal/100 ml. Conclusion and recommendation: Hindmilk can increase the weight of LBW babies. Further research is needed to find out the significant effect of increasing LBW babies’ body weight.
