Abstract

Children with thalassaemia major generally experience growth retardation and metabolic disorders. Stunting is a common feature of children and adolescents with thalassaemia. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with the incidence of stunting, yet high levels of ferritin due to multiple blood transfusions and the chelation therapy also have an impact on the incidence of stunting. This study aims at determining the association between vitamin D levels, ferritin and nutritional intake with the height of stunted children with thalassaemia major. This cross-sectional study involved 84 thalassaemia major children aged 4-14 years taken through consecutive sampling. This study showed 76 percent stunting children, 94,1 percent had ferritin levels of ≥1000 mg/dL and only 4.8 percent had vitamin D insufficiency. Based on Chi-Square test, ferritin levels were significantly associated with stunting (p= 0,000; OR 22,0), while nutritional intake and vitamin D levels were no significant association with stunting (p>0.05). In conclusion, ferritin levels were significantly associated with stunting on thalassaemia children, while nutritional intake and vitamin D levels were not associated with stunting. The recommendation of this study is the need for compliance with the use of iron chelation and paying attention to iron intake.
